Dr. Sathya Rao (He/him)
I am a professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta, Canada. My research interests are diverse and include translation studies (e.g., translation & philosophy, postcolonial translation, and municipal translation policies), francophone literature, theatre, cinema, French as a second language & technology, and Franco-Albertan history and literature. I am the founder and co-editor of the academic journal Alternative francophone.
As a teacher, I strongly value experiential learning and community engagement. Over the past 20 years, I have had the opportunity to (co-)supervise Honours and graduate students on a wide range of topics, including the translation of Queer literature for children, the translation of Nigerian literature in France, theatre surtitles in francophone minority settings, the translation of Chicano literature, Gao Xingjian in translation, dubbing The Flintstones into French, and Censorship and dubbing in Iran. I welcome new supervision opportunities.
I was awarded several teaching and research awards, including the Canadian Association for Translation Studies Vinay & Darbelnet Prize (2005), the GSA Graduate Student Supervisor Award (2015), the FGSR Great Supervisor Award (2019), the Students' Union Award for Leadership in Undergraduate Teaching (2019), the Community-Service Learning Instructor Teaching Award (2020) and the Roger Motut Award (2024) for my contribution to Franco-Albertan literature and history.
I have held several leadership roles in community organizations, including President of L'Unithéâtre, Vice President of the Société Historique Franco-Albertaine, and board member of the Community Media Coalition Canada Strategic Advisory Committee.
